Anzio Trip to Italy

June 2004

John Boller with the President of the United States

President Bush

On May 28th 2004, 24 Anzio veterans and their families, a total of 76 people, traveled to Italy to commemorate the 60th Anniversary of the Liberation of Rome.  For some, this was the first time in 60 years they have been back to Italy, others have been back a number of times - but for all it was a memorable occasion.  We visited the beaches where we first came ashore, and for the most part has remained unchanged.  For many it brought back many memories.

The main focus of our trip was on Memorial Day, May 31st at the U.S. Cemetery in Nettuno.  Here, we had an opportunity to honor and pay our respects to our comrades who did not return home - to let them know that we have not forgotten them.  The ceremony was attended by many high dignitaries from both the us and Italian governments.  A beautiful wreath from the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II was presented.  It is worth noting, that at the base of every grave marker, there are two small flags - one American and one Italian.  These flags are placed there every year by Italian school children, voluntarily.

We were honored guests at many ceremonies, hosted by the Mayors of Anzio, Nettuno, Rome and Artena.  We were also privileged to attend a reception at the US Ambassadors residence, and on June 4th we had the honor of meeting with President George W. Bush, Mrs. Bush and Secretary of State Colon Powell.  We also attended a reception in Florence where the Governor of the Province of Tuscany presented to each veteran a medallion with their name inscribed on it.

We also visited Cisterna, Velleteri, Artena and the Mussolini canal, scenes of some very bitter fighting 60 years ago.

Aside from attending ceremonies, we did manage to do some shopping and sightseeing in Rome, Florence and other cities.  We covered a lot of ground, met many people and were warmly received wherever we went.  The people of Italy have not forgotten the Anzio Beachhead Veterans of World War II.

Secretary/Treasurer
